Potty Training for Boys

So continuing with our potty training theme from last week, I thought I'd focus on little boys. Maybe you have a hunch that your little boy and Potty Scotty just aren't going to hit it off. So, what else is out there?

Well, maybe you should introduce him to Peter Potty instead. (No, I don't think that Peter and Scotty are related.)

Peter Potty is a child-sized urinal for your home. It even flushes--no plumbing required! The urinal is height adjustable so it can grow with your child and you can even mount it to the wall once he's outgrown the height settings.

The great thing about the Peter Potty is that you can teach your son how to stand from the beginning. Plus it'll make him feel like a "big boy" while he's learning. One of the few complaints I've heard about this product is that toddlers are sometimes a little too enthusiastic about flushing the urinal. If this is a problem, however, you can always leave the water reservoir empty. Just be sure to check it regularly so you can keep it clean!

I've fallen in love with a new high chair. It's the Pappy Re High Chair from PALI.

So what do you think of the recent and controversial Motrin ad that's been whipping moms into a frenzy? Check it out now before it's pulled from the internet. Motrin has already issued an apology and has promised to remove the ad as soon as possible.

Motherhood Uncensored was just one of the many moms who spoke out against this ad via the internet. As USA Today reported, this was a hard lesson in online social networking for Motrin ad execs.

I think this fetus-shaped cookie cutter needs no introductory title. I found these cookie cutters slightly disturbing but mostly hilarious.

Just imagine them spread out on a tray beside the fresh fruit and herbal tea at your next baby shower! Funny, right? A great alternative to "diaper cakes" (note: I am against anything called a cake which is not actually edible and covered in frosting) and games involving melted candy bars, right?
Or, maybe not? Maybe they are a little creepy and largely in poor taste. Besides, would anyone actually eat one??

What do you think? It's Friday afternoon...my mind is wandering...and I can't decide!

One thing I do know for sure: I'm still not a fan of that dirty diaper baby shower game involving melted candy bars. Moms already deal with enough dirty diapers in their lives. It doesn't become any more fun by calling it a "game".

New Bedding from Glenna Jean and Sweet Potato

Happy Friday! I'm happy to report that Glenna Jean and Sweet Potato by Glenna Jean both have new crib bedding. I like the way both of these crib bedding lines seem to conceptualize the entire nursery when they design their bedding. From the quilt to the mobile to the accent pillows to coordinating stuffed animals, these lines make it easy to pull together a designer nursery.

Glenna Jean has added 12 new collections! Some collections feature sweet pastels while others boast playful animal prints. But a couple collections really stood out for me. I love the Zelda Collection (shown) because it mixes a preppy black and white polka dots, stripes, and florals with bright bursts of color for a classic yet modern look.

Wavelength is another collection I love. It's a got a funky, retro feel and the green and brown color combination is low key enough to blend into the rest of your decor.

Sweet Potato has added two new collections: Milo and Lulu. Both are great, but my favorite is Lulu. It's a cute combination of green and purple with graphic flowers--great for parents who don't want their daughter's nursery to be "too pink" or "too girly."

Baby Halloween Costumes: Do or Don't?

As you all know, Halloween is tomorrow! So what I really want to know is: do you have a super cute costume for your baby or are you going to wait until he or she is older?
There are some obvious benefits to dressing up your baby for Halloween: the cuteness factor (of course), the photo opportunities, and yes, let's just admit it--the chance to show off how absolutely adorable your baby is! But not everyone thinks that this is a great idea. Erin at Mom Logic wrote a hilarious diatribe against baby costumes.

And a couple days ago Peter from one of my favorite blogs, The Poop, talked about what to do when kids won't wear their costumes. That's a tricky one because you've spent the time and money on the costume (hunched over the sewing machine or braving costume shop crowds--neither are what I consider a fun time). But really, at some point you just have to give up right? Is a cute photo op worth a potential temper tantrum?

Well, if you're on the fence over this issue then I suggest a compromise. Some baby rompers strike just the right balance between comfy baby clothes and costume. The Perfect Stroller for Trick or Treating

Kuster Already Popular with Celebrity Moms

Listen up, trendy parents: Kuster, a British-based company, has made it's way across the pond and onto CSN Baby! We're carrying both of their stylish, high tech high chairs and their high chair cushions, as well as their popular Jelly Baby Changing Mat.

Although the K1 and K2 High Chairs have their differences (in look and price) they can both be used from when baby is 6 months to 6 years old! You can also choose from a wide variety of stylish high chair cushions for either seat.

At just $175, the K2 High Chair is perfect for parents who want a modern look but have to get it on a budget. Okay, let's be honest: you can buy a high chair for under $175 but only a handful of them offer comparable style for that price(Bloom's Nano comes to mind, although it has a totally different, albeit modern, design aesthetic compared to the K2). Other than the style and the price tag, I like that the K2 High Chair is ergonomically designed and also features a handy basket for meal-time toys, bibs or wipes.

According to Kuster's Web site, Halle Berry owns a Kuster high chair, although they don't say which one. I'm assuming she got the K1 High Chair, which is a bit pricier at $250. It has its own unique, modern look. My favorite aspect of this high chair is the fact that the seat is all made in one piece so there are no crevices where food can get stuck. Hey, style is nice to look at but style that guarantees a fast clean up is so much better.

Another celebrity fan of Kuster is Laila Ali, according to Celebrity Baby Blog. Back in August they reported that she loves her Jelly Baby Changing Mat, which is constructed from ergonomic memory foam and is Latex and PVC free.

Pitter Patter: Crib Bedding That's Ethnic-Chic

Pitter Patter Collections is a really cool line that's new to CSN Baby. They design crib bedding with what they describe as an "ethnic-chic" look. In particular, they've been inspired by Asian and Hawaiian styles. You'll find paisleys, elephants, hula girls, and Hawaiian flowers. The looks are exotic and playful, and definitely a refreshing change from some of the more traditional crib bedding designs on the market.

My favorite collection from Pitter Patter is called Zen. I think the Zen Collection will appeal to a wide variety of modern parents whether they like the organic bedding, the Asian contemporary style, or the muted, modern color palate. There are three bedding collections in Zen: Bamboo, Lotus, and Mandalas. All of them are made with organic bamboo jersey Cotton. Bamboo is a sustainable crop, grown organically by Pitter Patter. The Cotton is then colored with naturally-based, low-impact dyes. So eco-conscious parents can feel good about putting baby to sleep on this soft, organic bedding. (Keep in mind that only the bedding in the Zen Collection is organic!)

Serena and Lily: New Bedding Collections!

One of my very favorite crib bedding lines Serena and Lily has recently launched 5 gorgeous new crib bedding collections. I swooned over Serena and Lily back in February and I'm still in love with their classic, timeless style.

The new collections are named Posey, William, Harper, Ben, and Francis. On a side note, I feel like Serena and Lily is a really great baby name resource, don't you?

Of the new collections, I prefer Frances for girls. Soft blue and lilac keep the look feminine yet unconventional. Plus, the unfussy posies distantly remind me of Mary Engelbreit but in a muted, sophisticated way. This collection has a dreamy, soothing feel to it, perfect for the nursery.

For boys, my favorite is William. Preppy stripes become not so preppy in bright blue and orange. The collection has a lot of energy--sort of like a little boy! I like that the color combination is unexpected and that it's mixed with the classic look of stripes. And I'm partial to stripes.

Topping My Wish List: The Storytime Rocker

I have big news for you all today: this is my 50th blog post on Baby This Baby That! It's a real pleasure keeping you up to date on the best baby products out there as well as exclusive offers and deals from CSN Baby so I hope you enjoy reading!

In honor of this momentous occasion, I decided to blog about the baby product that's on the very top of my wish list: Nurseryworks' Storytime Rocker.

I absolutely love this rocking chair. It manages to look very elegant and modern yet it still retains that comfy, inviting look that all the most well loved, lived in chairs seem to have. But that's not the only reason why I want one of these lovely rockers in my home. I also love the fact that it's extra wide. For a book lover such as myself, this is the most attractive feature (it also explains the Storytime Rocker's name). At 35 inches, it's the perfect width for me and a child to sit and read together, or I could curl up in the chair by myself with a book propped on my knees. Nursing moms will also enjoy the extra roomy seat (decorative pillows can make it more snug if necessary).

When I look at this rocker I see a nursery chair now and a cozy reading chair for years to come. That's what helps to justify the ever so slightly daunting price. It's also the perfect addition to a nursery that has to do double duty as a guest room when family or friends come to visit.

On the practical side, it's made of anti static fabric and is water resistant. You can choose from a wide variety of attractive colors (for the nursery or living room)in Microsuede, Twill, or Velvet, and legs in either dark or light Ash wood. That way you can totally customize your Storytime Rocker. Right now I'm dreaming about Navy Blue Twill with light Ash legs. What color combination fits your style?

How Do You Choose a Diaper Bag for Your Super Stylish Friend?

Okay, I'm back from my friend's baby shower and I can finally spill all the details. My sister and I knew right away that we wanted to give our friend a diaper bag for her shower. Choosing the right one took much longer, especially since she's known for her chic sense of style (no pressure!). After a lot of agonized online shopping and even some emailing with her mom and sister (hey, there are a TON of gorgeous diaper bags out there to choose from), we finally settled on a Nest Diaper Bag.

We chose Nest for their stylish designs and practical details. Their bags simply don't look like diaper bags. I've seen the Grommet Diaper Bag in Toffee Brown twice while walking down Newbury Street and I don't even think one owner was a mom (no child, no stroller, no baby gear, and no undereye circles either!). FYI the bag looks even more soft and luxe in person.

We settled on one of Nest's new designs: the Mercer Diaper Bag in Black with Navy Trim. In person even more so than in photos, this bag is really elegant. The black patent leather is very posh and the navy suede trim means it will go with just about anything. When my friend's brother saw it he said flatly, "That's not a diaper bag."

And yet,despite this outward disguise, the bag is chock full of mom-friendly features. First of all, there are so many pockets: 2 exterior pockets, 1 interior zippered pocket, 2 interior bottle holders, and 2 divided pockets for toys, books, or extra clothing. There's also a separate, zippered diaper compartment at the bottom of the bag, which features pockets for diapers and wipes as well as a large changing pad.

The entire bag is lined with Nest's signature fabric, which is turquoise and features their own pattern, made of pacifiers, storks, safety pins, and other nostalgic baby imagery. Plus let's not forget that the liner is waterproof and can be zippered out for cleaning.

There are suede straps on each end of the bag to close it. On the front and back there's also two straps with a magnetic closure. You can just use the magnetic closure when you're on the go, or use the other straps to form an "x" over the top of the bag so that it's more secure. The nice thing is that you can still reach into the bag even when all four straps are closed. A removable, adjustable long strap is included so that mom can choose how she wants to carry her bag. The hard bottom keeps it upright and gold toned feet protect it from scuffing or tipping.

Since Mom-to-be C also loves her high heels, we couldn't resist including a pair of Heelarious baby shoes for her baby girl. These crib shoes have received a lot of attention lately ranging from amused to outgraged. In fact, they were even featured on the Today Show this morning (don't I feel trendy!). I have to say, they make a really fun baby shower gift. Honestly, they're really adorable and, well, hilarious. All the moms at the shower had a good laugh over them and insisted on passing them around so everyone could take a look.

Wheely Bugs Are Wheely Fun (sorry, I couldn't resist!)

I'm so excited about the gift I got for my friend's baby shower this weekend and I want to tell you all about it! But seeing as that same friend reads this blog (Hi, Mom-To-Be C!)all the details will have to wait until next week.

So until then, I thought I'd tell you about the absolutely adorable ride-on toys by Prince Lionheart that are now available at CSN Baby.

Portable High Chairs: For Home or Travel

So lately I've been posting a lot about innovative feeding products, and I thought I'd expand that this week and talk about high chairs! I really like Portable High Chairs because not only do they save space in the home, they're also great when you're on the go. Throw one in the trunk and you'll always be ready for dinner out--no need to worry about whether or not the restaurant has a high chair for your baby (and whether or not it needs to be totally disinfected before you let your baby use it).

I like the Fast Table Hook-on High Chair by Inglesina. Thanks to its lightweight, painted steel tubular frame this high chair only weighs 3.5 lbs so it's easy to carry. Since I blogged about Boon's Squirt Baby Food Dispensing Spoon a couple weeks ago, I thought I'd tell you about another well designed, fun feeding product: The Palette Plate Set by Skip Hop.

The Palette Plate Set looks like an artist's palette with it's sleek white frame and bright spots of color. The shape makes it fun to look at but also convenient if you need to hold the plate and feed your baby (like an artist painting a canvas...think Jackson Pollack). Why Put Baby to Sleep on Coconuts and Lambswool?

Last week I got a chance to see Natural Mat's organic crib mattresses up close. I haven't had a chance to do that since I blogged about Naturpedic's organic mattresses a few months ago. Once again I was impressed by how soft and springy organic mattresses can be and once again I was reminded of how important they can be to the health of your baby.

It's so easy to get caught up in picking out a cute crib that some parents may realize too late that they didn't budget for a nice crib mattress. But the mattress should be something you think about and research at least as much as you do cribs, whether you choose to go organic or not.

I got a chance to see all three of Natural Mat's organic crib mattresses, but I'm going to tell you about the Coco Mat since it's the least expensive (although it still comes out to over $300).

Natural Mat's Coco Mat begins with coir (the outside of a coconut!), which provides a breathable but firm base for the mattress. It's really springy! It's also anti allergenic. The coir is harvested from the only organic coir plantation in the world, so you know this company doesn't just want to look organic on paper so to speak. They take living organic seriously.

The coir is sandwiched by 2 layers of lambswool, which is naturally flame retardent so it doesn't have to be doused in chemicals that might harm your baby while he or she sleeps. The wool has been treated with lemon, eucalyptus and lavender to make it non-allergenic, too. Sounds like a little spa for your baby, right? The wool also naturally provides insulation during the cold winter months and ventilation during the warm summer months just as it would for, well, a little lamb.

A 100% unbleached cotton herringbone cover tops off the coir and lambswool. This cover can be unzipped and machine washed at 140ºF to kill bacteria and dust mites. You should also purchase the Flannelette Organic Crib Mattress Protector Pad, which is made of soft organic flannelette material and--and this is important!--is waterproof.

Meet the Mutsy 4Rider

Since I got to take a gander (get it? Mother Goose... gander ...)at the Mutsy 4Rider yesterday, I wanted to tell you all about it.

The 4Rider comes in two styles: regular or light. This refers to the wheels. Everything else about the stroller remains the same. The 4Rider Light has lightweight, foam-filled wheels. The 4Rider Single Spoke Stroller(shown) has air-filled, single-spoke wheels, which make it about 4 pounds heavier but give it a very unique look, which I personally love.

Like the Slider, the 4Rider has a very airy, sleek design. I could keep talking about how good looking this stroller is, but I want to tell you about some of its amazing features as well.

For starters, it folds so easily. I've seen a lot of stroller demonstrations and this one really impressed me. In two simple moves the stroller was folded up on the ground with no loud cracking noises that would make me think I'd broken the thing. And it can be folded with the bassinet or seat in it!

Let's talk about the bassinet. It has several zippered pockets around the outside, which are perfect for little essentials that you want to keep within easy reach. They just melt right into the design. Very cool. The bassinet also sits very high so that, similar to a Stokke Xplory, you can be close to your baby as you go about town. If your baby falls asleep while in the bassinet, you can remove it with the carrying strap, bring it inside, and set it down (it has feet to keep it upright) without ever disturbing your baby.

The seat fully reclines and can be moved forwards or backwards to adjust the seat depth for a customized fit. You can check on your baby thanks to the window in the generous hood. The window can be hidden with a velcroed panel. Some strollers have nixed the hood window because they felt it disrupted the design. I think Mutsy has found a great way to compromise. And really that's what Mutsy is all about: the compromise between attractive design and practical functionality.

Breast-feeding on the Rise

I'm sure many of you have already heard about the recent government survey that suggests more than three out of four new moms now breast-feed their infants. This is the highest rate in the U.S. in at least 20 years.

I definitely support moms who choose to breast-feed. At the same time, my own mom chose not to and I support her decision, too. Moms need to make their own decision based on what is best for them, their families, and their bodies. For mothers who do make the decision to breast-feed, the Mayo Clinic offers a wonderful overview of the breast-feeding basics.

The part of the CNN article concerning the survey, which I found most interesting and frustrating, was at the very end. It stated that, "The latest CDC report found rates of breast-feeding were also lowest among women who are unmarried, poor, rural and younger than 20 and who have a high school education or less." It sounded a little accusatory to me, and I couldn't help thinking to myself, well, those women may not have the luxury to stay home and be constantly on call for feedings even if they wanted to.

And then I thought: I don't know any women who have the luxury to do that all the time. As we all know, being a mom is a full time job, but that doesn't mean it's a mom's only job.

Stroller Envy: Silver Cross Prams

Excuse me, let me just wipe the drool from my mouth as I gaze longingly at photos of the Heritage Collection of prams by Silver Cross.

Maybe you've experienced some drooling yourself while flipping through the recent People Magazine featuring Jennifer Lopez and her new twins, Max and Emme. Stroller Alert: Mutsy's Slider

If you love to be in the know about the latest, greatest, and hippest strollers, then read on!

Mutsy is a company that has been making strollers since 1937! Needless to say, they have a lot of experience. They recently unveiled a new stroller known as the Slider.

The Slider has an attractive, modern design. It comes in three colors: Red, Green, and White (shown). I have to admit, as much as I love orange (and I do), it's nice to see something different on the market. The white (shown here) is really eye-catching but I also like the Green, which is a subtle, moss green. All three colors would work for a boy or a girl.

One really innovative aspect of this stroller is its compactness. The Slider frame consists of 2 parts: the upper part, configured as a bassinet, baby/toddler seat or travel system (Graco or Maxi Cosi car seats work, as long as you have an adapter). The entire upper part detaches from the base, so the frame folds up extremely small. The wheels are also removable to make the frame even more compact!

The Slider is also very lightweight and maneuverable. Two large front swivel wheels make it easy to travel over cobbstone or uneven city streets. Brake pedals on either side and a single-hand, easily adjustable foam-grip handle make this stroller easy and comfortable to use.

Tripp Trapp: a High Chair Built to Last

I can't believe I haven't blogged yet about one of my favorite baby products: Stokke's Tripp Trapp High Chair! There are a lot of stylish, innovative high chairs out there (Bloom's Fresco High Chair and Boon's Flair High Chair come to mind) but my personal favorite is the Tripp Trapp.

First of all, it's a really clean, simple design. It's definitely not what I first think of when I hear the words "high chair". It would look great in a modern home or a beach cottage. And while it does come in some bright, cheery colors, it's also available in classic wood finishes that will compliment any interior. Plus Stokke offers some really adorable cushions so you can further personalize your Tripp Trapp.

Second, the seat and footrest are adjustable so that you can ensure a comfortable, customized fit for baby. I'm short so I know how uncomfortable it can be not to have your legs at right angles when you're sitting down. Being able to set the footrest where it will be most comfortable for your baby will keep baby from fidgeting while in the high chair.

Third, just like so many of my favorite cribs, it's convertible! Again, this goes back to the adjustable seat and footrest. This chair isn't just for babies. There are so many ways to repurpose this chair for babies up through adults.

Co-sleeping Compromise

Maybe my head's been stuck in the sand for a while (likely) but it seems like all of a sudden co-sleeping is getting a lot of attenion. For those of you who don't know, co-sleeping refers to the practice of parents sleeping with their child, usually for the first few months.

Some people are strong supporters and say that co-sleeping makes it easier for mom to get some sleep and also to adjust to her baby's sleep cycle. It also encourages breast feeding and can help baby's fall asleep faster. Even celebrities are starting to give it a try. For example, Missy at Celebrity Baby Blog recently reported that Myleene Klass, a British pop star, co-sleeps with her newborn baby and husband.

Despite these possible advantages, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns parents against this practice because it puts babies at risk of suffocation and strangulation. Kids Health for Parents has some useful information regarding the pros and cons of co-sleeping.

So once my sister eventually has a baby I know exactly what I'm going to get her: the Coco Baby Lounger by Bloom. Crib Notes: Stokke

In case you weren't "in the know," crib season is nearly upon us, and in honor of such a cozy time of year I thought I'd blog about one of the coolest cribs on the market: the Stokke Sleepi Crib.

This crib got a lot of attention when the Jolie-Pitts revealed that it was the crib they chose for baby Shiloh. Danielle at Celebrity-Babies.com blogged about it in the summer of 2006 when the news broke. And I must say, Brad and Angelina have very good taste.

I bought the Boon Frog Pod Deluxe Bath Toy Storage, which comes with 15 designer bath appliqués, three balls and two mini-scrubbies, for a friend as a shower gift. I will admit, the frog is a bit bigger than I expected, but that means that it can hold plenty of toys. I can actually see this little guy becoming your child's bathtime friend. Maclaren Rolls Out Their Strollers for 2008

The end of the year is approaching, which - if you're at all like me - may make you a little sad and nostalgic. Leave it to Maclaren to cheer everyone up with their preppy and practical new strollers for 2008!

I've been a fan of Maclaren for a while now and I like what they've done for 2008. The most obvious changes are in the colors and patterns of the strollers, but they've also added some new features such as a carrying strap for the Quest 2008 Stroller and sleek new wheels across the board. Maclaren fans may be wondering what new designer strollers Maclaren will unveil for 2008. I've added something new to my holiday wish list: one of the new diaper totes by DwellStudio. DwellStudio has come out with some new products and patterns to add to their already beautiful line of modern baby bedding and accesories. DwellStudio believes that products for babies should be well designed, aesthetically pleasing, and able to work seamlessly within the parent’s home.

The diaper tote not only has a sophisticated, streamlined look but it also has some great features. The exterior is coated canvas with a leather handle and a solid outer canvas pocket. The outer pocket can be used for quick storage of a newspaper, magazine, umbrella, or maybe a baby blanket. The possibilities are nearly endless. Well, it's officially the holiday season and I have officially discovered ducduc! This modern, New York based company is dedicated to modern design and corporate social responsibility.
